Bursary Scheme

Bursaries in terms of the above scheme will be granted under the following conditions :

  1. Applicants must be registered at the University of KZN for the academic year in question. Applicants can be in any year of study but preference will be to students who would not be able to study if they did not benefit from the bursary.
  2. Preference will be given to applicants registered in one of the following areas of study: Commerce, Law Transport Economics or the Engineering Fields.
  3. Applicants MUST be the dependents of taxi operators or drivers who are registered in one of the Taxi Associations in KZN.
  4. Successful applicants will be expected to work using their qualification in the taxi industry for a period after they have qualified.
  5. The bursary will cover the cost of fees, accommodation and books and a living allowance may be paid under certain conditions.
  6. The bursary will be awarded for one year initially but will be extended for further years of study subject to satisfactory progress on the part of the student.
  7. The decision of the KZNTCC in awarding the bursary will be final and any lobbying on behalf of an applicant will disqualify the applicant.
  8. The KZNTCC can only support one student at a time on this basis so the bursary will not be awarded to a new student every year. Rather the KZNTCC will support one deserving student through the course of completing their qualification and re-award the bursary once that student has graduated.

Investment in Halfway Howick

During the Preferred Supplier presentations, the option of the KZNTCC purchasing a 10% share in the Halfway Toyota Howick dealership was offered to the board. The board accepted this opportunity and concluded an agreement with the shareholders of the dealership to achieve this objective. A function which was attended by the KZN MEC for Transport Mr Willies Mchunu as well as the CEO of Toyota Dr Johan Van Zyl was held at the dealership in celebration of this partnership.

This shareholding has brought considerable benefits to the taxi industry as well as the dealership itself and it provides a useful source of funding for the operating costs of the KZNTCC through the quarterly dividends that are paid.
